I love historical fiction because it tells a story surrounding real events that I might not have known about before. Often used is a dual timeline, using a modern-day setting as well as one in the past, but #TheWarLibrarian by #AddisonArmstrong is different: it has dual timelines, but both are historical in contest. One is the frontlines of battle during #WorldWarI #TheGreatWar in France, following a young woman who is assigned as a librarian for the soldiers that have been hospitalized. Another timeline is 1976, the first year women were allowed to enter the #USNavalAcademy. Both timelines have a strong feminist element, but it's not out-of-place the way some stories often feel when interjecting 21st century thinking into a 20th century world. This was a very satisfying read. He was called the greatest athlete that ever lived. Now #NativeAmerican #Olympian #JimThorpe is getting a fresh look, from 21st century perspective, by #PulitzerPrize-winning author #DavidMaraniss. In case you don't recognize the name, Maraniss was responsible for When Pride Still Mattered: A Life of #VinceLombardi. The author takes a deep look at Thorpe, the racist world he lived in, and how he was portrayed in the media. I find it fitting that this book is coming out on the heels of the #Olympic officials deciding to add Thorpe's records to the official record books again, more than a century after they stripped him of his medals in the pentathlon and decathlon because he'd played minor league baseball for money.
