Megan Turner is in love with the past. As a tour guide at a beautiful historic mansion, she tells visitors about its original owner, Charles Whitley. An inventor and businessman in the early 1900s, he rose from poverty to wealth…only to disappear without a trace.
Charles was always intrigued by the future. He just never expected to go there. But when he repairs a mysterious clock he bought on his travels, he’s transported to the twenty-first century, with his home decorated for Christmas and overrun by strangers.
Charles is determined to find a way back to his own era, especially when he learns about what happened after he left. But as Megan introduces him to the wonders of smartphones, pizza, and modern holiday traditions, they both feel a once-in-a-lifetime connection. Could it be that, somewhere in time, they belong together?”
I’m not sure what drove me to try A Timeless Christmas (Amazon US) (Amazon UK) (AbeBooks) other than I was looking for Christmas stories and the time travel element was what piqued my interest. And I was immediately sucked in by the setting of the Whitley Mansion in modern day. Several years ago, when visiting my brother in the Twin Cities, I took the kids to the James J Hill House and museum in St. Paul, which is the largest home in Minnesota. I pictured that home as the setting of the Whitley home.
Unlike one of my favorite movies, Somewhere in Time, the time travel is in reverse, bringing Charles from the past into modern day, which I find just as interesting because he’s exposed to today’s conveniences like American pizza and cell phones. Megan enjoys getting to know the man about whom she’s spent much time researching, and at last she has an answer as to what happened when Charles disappeared at age 31 and was never heard of again.
A Timeless Christmas is a Hallmark book, made into a movie, so it’s definitely syrupy sweet, with a dash of drama and conflict, only to make the resolution that much better. I wasn’t looking for great literature, I was interested in a fluffy, breezy Christmas romance and that’s exactly what Hallmark knows how to produce. The most important question on my mind was if Charles would return to the past alone, or with Megan in tow? Or would he stay in the 21st century and find a life in modern-day America? You’ll just have to read the book to find out!
If you’d like to compare the book and the movie, A Timeless Christmas is on sale on Amazon Prime right now. I couldn’t resist as I don’t have the Hallmark Channel subscription. I love ingesting stories in multiple formats and scrutinizing the differences and similarities. I thought the movie was exactly what you’d expect from a Hallmark movie, but I liked the Time Travel twist.
