Question:

Do you think you will ever get tired of blogging? (submitted by Julie @ JadeSky)

I have blogged before, and yes, I got tired of it after five years. I was blogging for profit at the time, and the more I blogged, the more money I made. Since I didn’t work outside the home, I blogged a lot, mostly in the early mornings before the kids were up, at naptime, and then after dinner when my husband was home. I blogged seven days a week. I blogged on two sites at once at one point. After a while, it was harder to make money on the blogs, so I blogged even more. Then I simply burnt out. I had built up a great following of about 5,000 followers with hyper-local sites, and I was very proud of that, but between decreased revenue, raising four kids under the age of 10, and writing all the time, I’d simply had enough.

About six months later, I realized how much I missed writing and tried starting up a new blog, but it only lasted six months. I was falling into the same trap that I had fallen into before, and I didn’t want to be a slave to blogging again, so I focused on the important stuff: raising kids and looking for a job outside the home. So I had a few years off of blogging and missed it.

As for now, I’m blogging as a hobby. I also have a job outside the house which also involves some writing, I would imagine if I get a full-time job, I might blog less, but wouldn’t give it up entirely. I now have a better work/life/blogging balance and don’t have to blog for money. While I do use affiliate links and have affiliates featured on the right hand side, it’s strictly to pay for the web hosting. If for some reason, I made more money than that (highly doubtful), I’d just use the extra money to purchase new books to read and review.

What about my fellow book bloggers? Do you think you’ll ever get tired of blogging? How long have you been at it?

  1. I can definitely imagine that if you were blogging that much on top of raising kids and having the pressure of making enough money of it, you could get burned out from it! I’m glad you were able to come back to it as a hobby and for fun! I hope you have a lovely week and do drop by my Friday post if you have the time! – Juli @ A Universe in Words

  2. It really is a struggle sometimes trying to juggle a career, family and everything else life throws at you and maintain a blog. I imagine relying on blogging for income would only add to that–and make it feel more like an obligation at times. Blogging has only ever been a hobby for me. I definitely was able to put more effort and time into it in my early blogging years than I am now, but I have found a happy medium. I adjust as I need to. 🙂 And I continue to enjoy it. I hope you have a great weekend!

  3. I think that whilst the blogging is for fun and you don’t HAVE to blog, it remains enjoyable. I do wonder if I will still be blogging in 10 or 20 years though!
