Music Monday is a meme that was created by Drew from The Tattooed Book Geek.  I saw it at Carrie’s Book Reviews and _For Book’s Sake. You pick a song and/or video and share it on Mondays to change things up a little.

I grew up with the Eagles and Flying Burrito Brothers and Poco and Pure Prairie League and Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton, but I really didn’t get into country music until the late 1980’s’, when there were more and more artists pushing that envelope between country and rock. The artist that became a favorite was Vince Gill, formerly from Pure Prairie League, where I had sung along to his vocals on “Let Me Love You Tonight” repeatedly.

Gill was on tour and ready to perform in Green Bay one night many years ago when he found out his brother died. He took the stage and quietly told the audience about the phone call he received. All was quiet until some ass hat yelled, “Liar!” I won’t repeat what Gill’s response was, but it certainly wasn’t PG-rated. Go Rest High on that Mountain was a song that he started writing after his brother’s death, and finished it some years later. In 2019, Gill performed in Green Bay again and I got to see him in concert (I also saw him perform with the Eagles in 2018) and he told the story of the song.

I think I have all of Vince Gill’s CDs (yes, I’m old school and so is my vehicle, which has a 4-CD changer in it that I ALWAYS use. My husband and I are also former DJ’s and have accumulated a collection of more than 1000 CDs that we listen to all the time. Gill’s music is in regular rotation.

There is also a much-publicized version of Go Rest High on That Mountain at the funeral of George Jones in 2013, Vince Gill broke down when trying to perform because he was such a fan of Jones and more importantly, a friend.
