Music Monday is a meme that was created by Drew from The Tattooed Book Geek. I saw it at Carrie’s Book Reviews and _For Book’s Sake. You pick a song and/or video and share it on Mondays to change things up a little.
It’s Election Week here in America. I can honestly say that I have only missed voting in one or two primaries since I became able to vote in 1991 and never a general election. I take my duty very seriously, I read The Federalist Papers every two years before the Presidential or Mid-Term elections to remind me why we live in this federal republic.
This song, I am a Patriot, by Jackson Browne, was first introduced to me while I was in high school on his World in Motion CD (free to stream on Amazon’s Music Unlimited), which was released in 1989. I was politically-minded even then, and often argued with a friend about politics and was on our debate team. I even dreamed of getting involved in politics some day (ah, to be young and full of naivete, I’d never do that now). I am a Patriot spoke to me at the time.
And the river opens for the righteous
And the river opens for the righteous
And the river opens for the righteous
And the river opens for the righteous
And the river opens for the righteous
Someday
I was walking with my brother
And he wondered what’s on my mind
I said what I believe in my soul
Ain’t what I see with my eyes
And we can’t turn our backs this time

I am a patriot
And I love my county
Because my country is all I know
I want to be with my family
The people who understand me
I’ve got nowhere else to go
And the river opens for the righteous
And the river opens for the righteous
And the river opens for the righteous
Someday
And I was talking with my sister
She looked so fine
I said, “Baby, what’s on your mind?”
She said, “I want to run like the lion”
Released from the cages
Released from the rages
Burning in my heart tonight
And I ain’t no communist
And I ain’t no capitalist
And I ain’t no socialist
And I ain’t no imperialist
And I ain’t no democrat
Sure ain’t no republican
I only know one party
And it is freedom
I am, I am, I am
I am a patriot
And I love my country
Because my county is all I know
And the river opens for the righteous
And the river opens for the righteous
And the river opens for the righteous
Someday
And the river opens for the righteous…
